Installing Ubuntu

Ubuntu Linux has a couple of different options for installation. They name them as a desktop install, server install, and alternate install. All of which are offered in ISO CD format for download. The scope of this article will be the i386 architecture but can most likely be applied to others. The desktop CD install is also Live CD Linux so that you can try it out before installing, but we will go into that more later. The server CD install is geared more toward people who do not need a gui (Graphical User Interface) to work or those computers that do not have monitors hooked up to them at all times. The alternate CD install, according to Ubuntu, "allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu" which are out of the scope of this article.

Installing Ubuntu with the Desktop CD Install

The Ubuntu Desktop CD Install comes packaged as both a Live CD Linux and a Ubuntu installer all on one CD. Most people who are using Ubuntu on their home computer will want to download this type of Ubuntu installation.

1) Live CD Linux

Live CD Linux is a way for a user who is unfamiliar with the linux operating system to try it out without installing it on their hard drive. It is useful as a way to test run Ubuntu on your computer to make sure they are compadible. The Live CD is also useful for people to test out linux for the first time.

2) Ubuntu installer

The Ubuntu install is done through the Live CD enviornment. Once you boot up to the Ubuntu CD, Ubuntu will load Live CD Linux. On the desktop is a icon to start the installing process. Follow the prompts and you will have installed Ubuntu linux on your harddrive.

Installing Ubuntu with the Server CD Install

This CD does not include a Live CD version and is directed at installations on dedicated server machines. The installation is done by booting to the CD and following the installation steps from there.
